President Goodluck Jonathan is currently at loggerheads with some ex-ministers over his response to their ongoing trials with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) over a $1.2 billion arms deal. PoliticsNGR has learnt that some of the ministers are locked in a cold war with Jonathan for reportedly abandoning them after the EFCC effected their arrests. According to the Nation, the ex-ministers want the former president to confess to the disbursement of the funds and negotiate a plea agreement with President Muhammadu Buhari. But Jonathan is said to be surprised by the revelations made by the EFCC  during the course of its investigations and wants the law to run its full course. The source said;

A total of 44 people died and 180 injured when two trains collided head on in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria in Egypt, media reports said. Television reports also showed pictures of bodies covered with bed sheets at the site, and some carriages were shown to be derailed because of the collision, reported  Wam , the Emirates official news agency. In recent years, Egypt has seen several rail tragedies. Its worst rail disaster was in 2002, when a train heading to southern Egypt caught fire, killing over 360 people, the report said

West Ham  were linked with a move for the Sporting midfielder William Carvalho earlier this week and it appears that the Hammers are closing in on the player now. The Portuguese international is a priority target for Slaven Bilic and the Londoners are willing to smash their club transfer record in order to sign him. According to  latest reports , West Ham have reached a verbal agreement with Carvalho and they are now looking to agree on a fee with Sporting. The Portuguese outfit are holding out for in excess of £30m and a West Ham delegation is in Lisbon to sort out the transfer. Furthermore, it is believed that Tottenham and Crystal Palace are interested in the player as well. However, it seems that West Ham are the ones who are more serious about signing him. Carvalho helped his country win  Euro 2016  and is one of the most sought after midfielders in  Europe  right now. The defensive midfielder could take West Ham to a different level if the transfer goes through.

A US judge has dismissed allegations that Taylor Swift got a radio DJ fired, but court proceedings will continue to consider the singer's allegations that he sexually assaulted her. David Mueller has accused Swift of slandering him to his radio station, alleging her complaint led to his unfair dismissal. Swift is counter-suing Mueller in the civil case, alleging he groped her during a 2013 backstage photo op with fans and guests before a concert in 2013. US District Judge William Martinez ruled that Swift could not be held liable because Mueller failed to prove that she personally set out to have him fired. He agreed with Swift's attorney, who had filed a motion asking for the pop star to be dropped from Mueller's lawsuit, saying his case should have been against his Colorado radio station. Swift was happy to hear the judge's ruling in court, hugging members of her legal team.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday dispatched forces to the border and issued an ultimatum for Laos to withdraw the soldiers by Thursday.  The Cambodian strongman flew to Vientiane on Saturday to hold urgent talks with Lao Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.  In a news conference after the meeting, broadcast live on Hun Sen's Facebook page with simultaneous translation into Khmer, the Lao leader said he had ordered the withdrawal.  "I've ordered the authorities involved to withdraw troops from that area by tomorrow morning," Thongloun Sisoulith said.  Thongloun said he was sorry he had not responded to an Aug. 2 letter from Hun Sen seeking withdrawal of the troops.

The state of Maharashtra intends to pursue the digitisation of its economy - in line with many other Indian states - so will look to replace the the margin bells with mouse pads as courts, police stations and civil service departments fall in line with the ‘new India’ of space research and IT hubs.

Get ready for a new tab in Facebook on the web, mobile and TV apps, as the social network  has announced  it's replacing the video button with "Watch." Watch is "a new platform for shows on Facebook," and why that doesn't yet explain why we'd want one, but given  Silicon Valley's obsession with the  format , it's not hard to imagine why this is what we're getting. At first, Watch will be available to a " limited subset " of US users, before rolling out to more people here over the next few weeks. Judging by the layout and features, Watch is intended as an alternative to YouTube for  video creators  of various sizes. It gives creators a way to lay out their entries/episodes in a more logical format than the usual profile feed and, of course, make money from their videos from TV-style Ad Breaks as Facebook exposes them to slices of its billion+ daily active users. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) says N11 trillion in electricity funds was squandered by the administrations of former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan,  The Cable reports. The former presidents were in charge of the country between 1999 and 2015. In a report titled ‘From darkness to darkness: How Nigerians are paying the price for corruption in the electricity sector’ which was launched in Lagos on Wednesday, the organisation called for a probe into the alleged squandering. It said the N11 trillion “financial loss” comprises public funds, private equity and social investment (or divestments) in the power sector. The 65-page report also noted that the “loss” may reach over N20 trillion in the next decade “given the rate of government funding and investment in the power sector.”  The report said the country’s power sector reforms under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act of 2005 have not yielded the desired re

The first steps towards figures of authority facing justice for their role in the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 which saw 96 Liverpool fans die at the Sheffield Wednesday ground were taken yesterday when five men appeared in court on criminal charges relating to the tragedy. Families of the victims packed the court to see the beginning of what could be the last act in the 28-year-long saga, which began when police opened the gates at the FA Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest and a crowd surge led to scores of fans being crushed to death.

The Secretary to Kwara State Government (SSG), Alhaji Isiaka Gold, on Wednesday said Senate President, Bukola Saraki has returned all monies paid to him as pension back to the coffers of the state government. The SSG made this known on Wednesday in Ilorin in a press statement issued to clarify the issue of Saraki’s pension being paid by the state government. According to him, Saraki, who was a two-term governor of the state, has stopped receiving pension from the state since August 2015. The SSG did not state how much was returned to government coffers, but said a letter dated Aug 20, 2015 by the Senate President also directed that money credited to his account for pension be refunded to the government. “Dr Saraki requested that the payment of pension to his account be stopped and the amount already credited to the account be refunded to the Government, the State Government promptly complied.

Acting President Emmerson Mnangagwa has donated R10 000 towards the treatment of eight-year-old Bridgette Mandimutsira, who is suffering from a rare skin cancer that has affected her eyesight and hearing. The Acting President met with Bridgette, who has been seeking treatment in South Africa and her mother Ms Benedict Makumbe at the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs offices yesterday. “I was touched when I saw her on TV seeking assistance to go and receive treatment in South Africa and I said to the Permanent Secretary (Mrs Virginia Mabiza) that I also want to contribute towards her treatment and I managed to source the R10 000 that was needed,” he said. Ms Makumbe expressed gratitude to the Acting President for his gesture.

Clashes between an armed group and a self-defence group in southeastern  Central African Republic  have left at least 30 civilians dead including six Red Cross volunteers who were attending a crisis meeting at a health facility, officials said on Wednesday. The violence took place late last week in the town of Gambo, which is about 75 kilometres from Bangassou, a town that has been a flashpoint amid the upsurge of bloodshed in the long chaotic country. "We are appalled by the news of the death of our fellow volunteers," said Antoine Mbao-Bogo, president of the Central African Red Cross. "We call on all parties to take steps to spare the civilian population, and to respect all humanitarian workers."

The captain of Mexico’s national football team has been sanctioned by the US for allegedly being a “front person” for a major drug-trafficking cartel. Rafael Marquez was one of 21 people and 42 organisations singled out by the US treasury department for sanctions. They are all accused of having ties with alleged drug trafficker Raul Flores Hernandez. Mexican singer Julio Cesar Alvarez is also on the list. Both he and Rafael Marquez are accused, in a US treasury department statement, of having “longstanding relationships with Flores Hernandez… acted as front persons for him and his DTO [drug-trafficking organisation] and held assets on their behalf”. The statement said the ruling meant that any assets of theirs under US jurisdiction or controlled by people in the US would be frozen. Four people have been killed in election-related violence in Kenya, where the opposition claimed massive rigging in a vote that President Uhuru Kenyatta looked certain to win. The east African nation, keenly aware of post-poll violence a decade ago that left 1,100 dead, was on a knife-edge after a day of isolated protests in opposition strongholds. The unrest broke out after opposition leader Raila Odinga claimed massive fraud as Mr Kenyatta surged ahead in provisional results, with 54% compared to his 44.7%. Results from over 96% of polling stations were in. Two protesters were shot dead in the flashpoint slum of Mathare in Nairobi, where police also fired tear gas at crowds who burned tyres and blocked roads throughout the day. Mr Abramovich and Ms Zhukova, an art collector and gallery director, met in 2005 and have two children together.  “After 10 years together, the two of us have made the difficult decision to separate, but we remain close friends, parents, and partners in the projects we developed together,” the couple said a joint statement. Enugu State Government has discovered and weeded out 6,280 ghost workers and pensioners from the nominal rolls of local governments councils and its Pensions Board. Part of the discovery was fallout of the Committee that recently disbursed the first tranche of the Paris Club Refund, which was used to offset all the outstanding salaries and some pensions of Local Government workers and retirees respectively, totaling 3,462 ghost pensioners. It would be recalled that a Committee headed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Edward Ubosi, had discovered 2,818 ghost workers in the nominal roll of Local Government staff. President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday night called Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, to commiserate with him and the people of the State over the Ozubulu Church attack. Many were killed and others injured at the St. Philip Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area. Buhari, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Malam Garba Shehu, condemned the attack in strong terms. “The President has just finished speaking to Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, in the course of which he commiserated with him, the families of the victims and the citizens of the state over the tragic shooting incident this morning”, it read. He described the incident as “an appalling crime against humanity and unspeakable sacrilege”. The President added that there was no justification whatsoever to target Church worshippers and kill them in cold blood.

Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), says Nigeria is on the pathway of economic recovery. A statement signed by his media aide, Essien Inyang, on Sunday, said Enang made the comment at an event to mark the end of the second legislative year of the 8th National Assembly. Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, has commiserated with the government and people of Anambra State over the killing of innocent worshipers on Sunday. Gunmen had invaded St. Phillips Catholic Church, Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, shooting at random and killing about 50 worshippers. In a condolence message signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Tever Akase, on Sunday, Governor Ortom said he was saddened by the incident and joined millions of other Nigerians in condemning the dastardly act. Ortom said “human life must be considered as sacrosanct by all, stressing that, the Ozubulu incident is indeed a black day, not only in Anambra State but also across the country”. He emphasized that, “places of worship are not targets of attacks even in war situations” and wondered what might have motivated the gunman to embark on the murderous mission. The Governor urged the Church to be prayerful and remain courageous at the trying moment.

US actors Chris Pratt and Anna Faris have announced that they are separating after eight years of marriage in joint statements shared on social media. The couple, who met in 2007 while filming the romantic comedy Take Me Home Tonight, said attempts to save their relationship had failed. "We tried hard for a long time, and we're really disappointed," Pratt wrote in a post on Facebook on Sunday.  Pratt, 38, and Faris, 40, were married in 2009. They have a son named Jack. Though it’s relatively popular over here in the West, the Dragon Quest series is quite the big deal in Japan, to the point that Square Enix has enacted a company policy to only release each new game on a weekend due to complaints from other companies about loads of employees calling in “sick” and taking vacation days. The latest title,  Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age , is due to arrive in the West sometime in 2018, but it launched this past weekend in Japan and put up some truly impressive numbers. Famitsu is reporting that Dragon Quest XI has cleared 2 million copies in  two days , totaling 2,080,806 copies between both versions and the various bundles they were sold with; the 3DS version sold 1,130,468 units, while the PS4 version sold 950,338 units. Certainly an explosive start for the game, then, and it’s sure to go up plenty more when the Switch port eventually hits, and the Western audiences can get their hands on the game.

Microsoft will be rolling out an update to its  Microsoft Teams service  over the next few days which will enable a variety of new admin features relating to apps (i.e. connected experiences) within Teams. “Put simply, there will be three new controls that will allow you to manage in detail which third party apps can be used in Microsoft Teams,” Microsoft’s Luis Carrasco states in a  blog post . “As an admin, you can choose to allow or block all third-party apps, individually choose which apps to allow or block, choose what happens as new apps get submitted into the Microsoft Teams app catalog.” As part of this update, the Tabs and Bots will be renamed Apps and admins will immediately be able to enable or disable an app, allow or block all third-party apps, and sideload external apps for testing without submitting them to the Teams app catalog.

The internet of things is a massive security nightmare. US lawmakers are finally starting to try and fix that. A bipartisan group of U.S. senators is introducing legislation that seeks to address vulnerabilities in computing devices embedded in everyday objects — known in the tech industry as the "internet of things" — which experts have long warned poses a significant threat to global cyber security. The new bill would require vendors that provide internet-connected equipment to the U.S. government to ensure their products are patchable, and conform to industry security standards. It would also prohibit vendors from supplying devices that have unchangeable passwords or possess known security vulnerabilities. Republicans Cory Gardner and Steve Daines and Democrats Mark Warner and Ron Wyden are sponsoring the legislation, which was drafted with input from technology experts at the Atlantic Council and Harvard University. Samsung is developing a new wearable device that will combine "the best bits from Gear S3 and Gear Fit 2". The new device won't be the Gear S4, but an entirely new device that will have some smartwatch functions, along with fitness tracking capabilities. Samsung revealed details about the new wearable itself via a survey to members of its SmartLab Plus research community, where it mentioned details of the device, before asking a question regarding taglines for the product's promotion. The company says the new wearable will have a small body, with thin interchangeable straps so you can personalise it to your own tastes.
