FDA: Stop buying miracle cancer drugs on Instagram

Image
The FDA has issued a warning to social media users not to be taken in by miracle cures hawked on the internet. The agency found 14 companies that made fraudulent, outrageous claims about the power of their medicines on platforms like Facebook and Instagram. Marketed as "treatments," and often described as "natural," these pills are likely to do more harm than good to people undergoing treatment. Nicole Kornspan, a safety officer at the FDA, explains that these drugs are often "a great temptation to jump at anything that appears to offer a chance for a cure." In addition, pet owners are being suckered in with similar bogus treatments aimed at curing cancer in dogs and cats. These remedies are often quite pricey, although often cheaper than the cost of visiting a vet for proper treatment.

Chelsea set themselves apart from Spurs thanks to experience

Image
Chelsea overcame Southampton on Tuesday night to extend their lead over Spurs to seven points. They set themselves apart from their London rivals thanks to their experience. Winning the Premier League is difficult. Just ask Steven Gerrard. It takes far more than mere talent. Athletic, technical and tactical gifts are all well and good, but it is – as it is with most sports – a competition that, while played with your feet, is won and lost between the ears. That is why there was such shock and wonderment at Leicester City’s miraculous title-winning campaign last season. Experience is something that is reserved for the established, the accomplished, the ever-present, hard-line winners.

Japanese tattoo artist goes to court to challenge a national revulsion to body art

Image
Visitors to Japan who have tattoos bigger than a Band-Aid can forget about going to hot springs or swimming in a public pool. They also can rule out some beaches and gyms, certain restaurants and karaoke rooms, and even some convenience stores. This is because tattoos are strongly associated with organized crime here — specifically the yakuza, or Japanese mafia — and are therefore almost universally viewed with repugnance. Case in point: When Disney released the  animated movie Moana  here recently, the advertising featured only the young girl in the title, and not the heavily tattooed Maui, who was shown on posters elsewhere (although the company says it was simply a marketing decision).
