Will robots take your job? Website estimates which jobs will be automated

Image
A  new website hopes to answer a question  in the minds of many people — “Will my job be automated?” If you’re a priest, podiatrist, dentist, or photographer, you can expect to stay employed, according to the site. If you’re a technical writer, taxi cab driver, or accountant, you might want to start retraining. Willrobotstakemyjob.com  was created by a developer and graphic designer,  Mubashar Iqbal  and  Dimitar Raykov  respectively, who’d read a paper by a pair of Oxford economists who set out to predict which jobs were most likely to be automated in the future. Iqbal and Raykov decided to make the results of the paper more accessible. On the site, users can type an occupation, such as teacher, and select from a list of associated professions, like teacher assistants (56 percent chance of automation), choreographers (0.4 percent), or animal trainers (10 percent). You’re also free to view jobs at random. We did, and found that stonemasons have an 89 percent chance of being

The best portable apps 2017

Image
Portable apps are programs that don't have to be installed, and don't change your PC's settings. Provided there’s enough space available, you can store portable apps anywhere – an internal drive, an external storage device like a USB stick or SD card, on a networked drive, or a cloud storage service like OneDrive or DropBox.  Portable apps have several advantages: they make it easy to switch between different computers because you can take your software with you; they don't interfere with any other programs installed on your PC; and they can be used on PCs with restricted user permissions (at work or school, for example). Some portable apps have an ‘installer’, but don't worry – this just unzips a compressed file archive and saves the extracted files to a location of your choice; it doesn’t make any changes to your system files. Other portable apps are provided as a regular ZIP file for you to extract yourself.  The program itself is an EXE file, but the

Ethiopia turns off internet nationwide as students sit exams

Image
The country has closed its digital borders to prevent leaks during tests after papers were posted online by activists last year Ethiopia  has shut off internet access to its citizens, according to reports from inside the country, apparently due leaked exam papers for the nation’s grade 10 examinations. Outbound traffic from Ethiopia was shutdown around 4pm UK time on Tuesday,  according to Google’s transparency report , which registered Ethiopian visits to the company’s sites plummeting over the evening. By Wednesday afternoon, access still had not been restored.

Flavour: “I Don’t Want To Get Married”

Image
I don’t like to talk about being a father but I don’t have any plans for marriage right now and it is because my career is very demanding. I would always want to spend time with my family and it is not something I can do now because I am all over the place. I was raised in the proper way with my parents always watching over me and I want to do the same to my family. For now, I don’t want to get married.”

The World’s Largest Floating Solar Plant Is Finally Online

Sungrow Floating Power Plant The world’s largest floating solar power plant is now online in China. Built by Sungrow, a supplier of PV inverter systems, the 40MW plant is now afloat in water  four to 10 meters deep , and successfully linked to Huainan, China’s grid. The placement was chosen in large part because the area was previously the location of coal mining operations; and, as a result, the water there is now mineralized and mostly useless. The lake itself was only formed after years of mining operations, the  surrounding land  collapsed and created a cavity that was filled with rainwater. Floating solar plants are advantageous  because they put otherwise useless water and land to good use, and the water naturally cools the system and the ambient temperatures, improving generation and limiting long-term damage from heat. They also avoid taking up space in densely populated regions, which is especially an issue in China; the country is currently home to  more than 100 cities

President Trump Has Said He Will Withdraw From the Paris Climate Agreement

Image
President  Donald Trump  has told aides he intends to pull out of the  Paris climate agreement , throwing into doubt a landmark treaty that scientists have said is vital to combating  global warming . According to two White House officials, the President has not yet decided on how to withdraw from  the agreement  — either through a multi-year formal process or the more extreme act of quitting the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The aides cautioned any decision isn’t final until it is announced, and that the President is still being lobbied by others to remain in the agreement. Amid multiple reports that he had decided to withdraw, Trump said an announcement would come soon. "I will be announcing my decision on the Paris Accord over the next few days," Trump said Wednesday morning on  Twitter . Trump made withdrawing from the agreement, entered into by former President Barack Obama in 2015, a central focus of his campaign, arguing that it ove

Nothing to cheer from OPEC

Last week I mentioned that the market expected OPEC to extend its production cuts when it met last Thursday and it duly delivered: the capacity reductions that have been in place since January will continue for another nine months from 1 July. OPEC’s basket price nonetheless fell by a couple of dollars – nearly 5 per cent – to US$49.48 by Friday but as I record this video on Monday 29th of May, a slight recovery seems to be underway. I guess some profit taking played its part in the fall. But what about the wider picture? Is OPEC’s decision good or bad for sentiment? On the day after OPEC’s meeting, the world’s largest shipbroker Clarksons published a short commentary but did not offer a definite view. The production cuts could – note that: ‘could’- affect tanker demand, either via lower crude and product exports – which account for 27 per cent of all seaborne trade, it said – or through reduced import demand, if the oil price rises as a result. I don’t pretend to be an expert analyst

Another Kyrgyz journalist accused of being an “enemy of the people”

Image
On 27 May, Kyrgyzstan’s main television channel ran an eight-minute item with the provocative title of  “Fireraisers” . The programme accused Ulugbek Babakulov, a correspondent for our news agency, of inciting racial hatred. It then went on to call Fergana “tendentious”, and demand that our site be blocked in Kyrgyzstan.  The trigger for this story was an article we published on 23 May  concerning ultra-nationalist material on Kyrgyz social media . The programme accused us of “disseminating material of an inflammatory nature” and trying to present Kyrgyzstan as “a fascist state populated entirely by nationalists”.  The news item included several extracts from Babakulov’s article, suggesting that Babakulov should face “strict criminal justice”, and opinions on the subject from “experts”. The latter were united in their view that journalists should “avoid controversial subjects” and not “drag up some sort of analysis from social media sites”.

Kelechi Iheanacho to become most expensive Nigerian player in EPL

Image
Nigerian forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, has been offered twice his present earning at Man City by West Ham United as his move to the Hammers draws near. Iheanacho’s representatives haver opened talks with the hammers with the Manchester City player also participating in the negotiations which took place during the weekend. Iheanacho arrived Manchester from the camp of the senior national team of Nigeria  on Saturday  after helping them draw 1-1 against Corsica, a game he scored Nigeria’s lone goal to help preserve their unbeaten run. West Ham are willing to pay the 20 year old £70,000 a week, which is twice what he presently earns at the Etihad after his new deal just before the start of the recently concluded English Premier League in England. The sum he will earn in a week means around N1.57 billion per season in Nigerian currency, and will make him the second highest earning Nigerian player in Europe after Victor Moses of Chelsea. Already his impending transfer to West H

Baby killed in protest

Image
The mother of a 2-week-old baby boy who died, allegedly after inhaling tear gas fired by police during a service delivery protest in Durban in the early hours of Monday morning, wept as she watched his tiny body being carried to the state mortuary van in a white plastic packet. Friends and family stood silently at her side, their heads bowed. One held the blue fleece blanket they had wrapped baby Jayden Khoza in, before marching his body to the local police station. In a statement issued on the protest on Monday, Abahlali baseMjondolo (shack dwellers movement) said the Foreman Road Abahlali branch had organised a road blockade yesterday after their demands, made on May 23, were not dealt with. The incident at Clare Estate has called into question the police’s use of force in protest situations and also placed a spotlight on a number of service deliver issues facing residents in eThekwini, particularly in informal settlements.

The fastest way to chill your beer

Image
You always forget to chill the booze. Somehow the burgers get prepped and the decorations get hung, but fifteen minutes before the cookout begins, you’re stuck with lukewarm  beer . Well, not anymore. Because if there’s one thing science can help us with, it’s thermodynamics. And that’s really all this problem is—how do you lower the temperature of a liquid inside a metal can (or glass bottle) as quickly as possible? The salt water method This is the most basic and practical way to cool drinks, because virtually everyone has the materials to do it. The process is simple: Fill a container (something insulted like a cooler is best) with ice,  water , and lots of salt. You really can’t overdo it on the  salt  here, but you can overdo it on ice. Make sure to add enough water to surround the drinks, since that gives you the maximal surface area to cool the beer inside.  Submerge your cans and/or bottles as much as possible. Make sure that they aren’t packed too tightly, sin

Luciano Spalletti: Roma sack head coach after 16 months in charge

Image
Roma have sacked head coach Luciano Spalletti after finishing second in Serie A this season. The announcement came after Roma  beat Genoa 3-2  on Sunday as Diego Perotti's last-minute winner secured automatic qualification for the Champions League. Spalletti joined Roma for a second spell in January 2016. "We would like to thank Spalletti for his hard work and his significant contribution since his return,"  said Roma President Jim Pallotta. "Under his stewardship this season, the team has won more Serie A points and scored more goals than any side in Roma's history. We wish Luciano all the best for the future. "This club is on a constant path of growth and that will continue with the appointment of a new coach who shares our values and philosophy and who will continue to help us take AS Roma forward." Spalletti, 58, coached Roma from 2005 to 2009, twice winning the Coppa Italia, before he resigned and joined Russian club Zenit St Peter

Everton star insists that he is happy to stay put at Goodison Park

Image
Everton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has said that he is happy to be a part of the club and will focus on helping the Toffees finish in the top four of the Premiership standings next season. Schneiderlin  said , “I’m very happy to be here, very happy to come in every day and happy – like I’ve said since the beginning – to find the joy on my face again, to play week in and week out and, most importantly, have good games. “I think that’s what I did, even if I know myself that I can be even better and improve. That’s what I’m going to try to do next season, have no little injuries or things like that and play every game. That’s my main focus and I want to improve and help this team to be in the top four.” After managing just 11 minutes of action whilst he was with Manchester United during the first half of the season, the French international Schneiderlin joined Everton during the January transfer window for £20 million. Since arriving at Goodison Park, Schneiderlin has b

Nigerians can own houses with N30,000‎ said by Osinbajo

Image
Nigeria’s Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo says under the N100 billion social housing scheme of the present administration, anyone who can afford N30,000 will be able to own a house. The Acting President said this at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday at an event tagged “A Smile for Every Nigerian” organised to commemorate the administration’s second anniversary. Prof. Osinbajo further explained that the housing scheme was part of the administration’s social intervention programme that had not been mentioned. Osinbajo said, “This is 100bn set aside for the Family Home Fund our Social Housing Project. The 100b is a yearly contribution to our N1trn Social Housing Fund, the largest in the history of the country. “The World Bank and the African Development Bank are contributors to the Fund. From this Fund, developers will borrow 80% of the cost of project and counter fund with their own 20%. “The same fund will enable us to provide inexpensive

36 million Android devices could be infected with 'Judy' malware

Image
The malware was included in some apps available through the official Google Play Store, with Checkpoint saying between 8.5 and 36.5 million users could have been affected. That means the malicious software could be the most wide-spread malware yet to hit the official Android app store. At this time, the actual number of infected users remains unconfirmed, but Checkpoint warns the malware was present in some apps that had been available on the Play Store for "several years". As the firm explains, the malware "is an auto-clicking adware which was found on 41 apps developed by a Korean company." Checkpoint says 'Judy' generates fraudulent clicks on ads, which results in revenue for the perpetrators, who created a "benign bridgehead app", which inserts a connection to the users' phone into the app store.

Gunmen attack Bayelsa police station, kill sergeant

Image
Suspected gunmen attacked the Sagbama Police Station, Sagbama, Bayelsa State, on Sunday, killing a police sergeant on guard in the the station. It was gathered that the incident, which occurred about 8.30pm on Sunday, threw the police station into serious confusion and panic. The yet-to-be identified police sergeant was reportedly gunned down by the hoodlums who came in on motorcycle. The hoodlums, said to be two in number, escaped after the attack. The victim was rushed to the Sagbama General Hospital, where he later died. The Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Police Command, Mr. Asinim Butswat, said the police had launched a manhunt for the killers. Butswat said, “We are working to establish the motive behind the dastardly act because they didn’t stop. We recovered the rifle of the dead policeman. “They shot at a group of policemen and rode off, but we have swung into action, while some people are helping with useful information”.

The Wonder Woman Movie Is Even Better Than You Hoped It Would Be

Image
Every superhero origin story has the moment: The music swells, time slows, and the hero finally emerges on screen in their full costume, ready to kick ass.  Wonder Woman  has this scene as well, and it might just be the best one we’ve ever seen—not only because it’s so badass, but because it’s been so, so overdue. I’m very excited to report that this scene is just one of the many,  many  good things about  Wonder Woman , the latest film set in the DC Extended Universe. Directed by Patty Jenkins, DC’s historic, first female-led superhero movie is set largely during World War I, but it’s Diana’s story from start to finish. We first meet her as a young, Amazonian princess, who is still a wide-eyed young girl. The Amazons live on the hidden island of Themyscira, training to fight the god of war Ares, and we see Diana evolve into a fierce warrior with mysterious, special powers. When a U.S. spy named Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) accidentally makes his way to the island, the reali

Apple, Facebook and Google condemn Texas transgender bill

Image
Proposed legislation in Texas has irked some of the biggest names in tech, sparking condemnation from the likes of  Mark Zuckerberg ,  Tim Cook  and 12 other influential tech leaders. If passed, this controversial state law would only allow transgender students to use restrooms that match the gender printed on their birth certificate. While Texan lawmakers continue to debate what's become known as the "bathroom bill", the influential executives have penned a letter urging the state's governor not to pass the "discriminatory" legislation. Senior employees from Microsoft, Amazon and game developer  Gearbox Software  have also co-signed the letter with Facebook and Apple, claiming that the proposed law would be "bad for employees and bad for business." Governor Greg Abbott has revealed that he intends to pass the controversial bill before the end of May.

Bangladeshi girls being trained how to avoid online predators

Image
With an alarming rise in cybercrimes, often including blackmail, police offer workshops for thousands of teenagers What their attackers bet on is shame: in a conservative society, the horror of an intimate photo leaking, or rumours being spread, is enough to buy a teenage girl’s silence. “We didn’t even know anyone could harm us through the internet,” said Sharifa Oishee, a schoolgirl in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s capital.  But research shows otherwise: teenagers are overwhelmingly the victims of an alarming rise in cybercrimes in  Bangladesh , driven, as elsewhere, by the proliferation of smartphones and social media. Police last month began training thousands of teenage girls to defend themselves against blackmail or harassment online. Girls and women make up 70% of the victims of cyber-harassment, according to authorities.  More than 10,000 girls have taken part in the workshops during April and May, with Facebook safety a key focus. Dhaka is the  second most active c

Milan set deadline for Manchester United target Gianluigi Donnarumma to decide his future

Image
Milan remain hopeful of tying down  Manchester United  target Gianluigi Donnarumma to a new deal but admit they cannot wait all summer for a decision to be met. Donnarumma, 18, has a contract at the San Siro until 2018 but has so far failed to reach an agreement with his club over an extension. His agent Mino Raiola, who also represents Manchester United trio Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, remains in talks with the Serie A giants but recently insisted there is "a lot of time" left for an agreement to be met. Milan insist they are ready to meet any demands made by Donnarumma, who is widely regarded as the best young goalkeeper in football. However, contrary to Raiola's recent comments, the club's general manager Marco Fassone insists the Rossoneri do not have time to wait around for a lengthy contract stand-off and have no option but to draw up a "back-up plan" should no decision be met soon.

A Doctor’s Trial in a Turkish Border Town

On April 24, 2017, Serdar Kuni, a 45-year-old Kurdish doctor accused of providing medical aid to Kurdish rebels, stood in a courtroom in Sirnak in southeastern  Turkey . The courtroom overlooked buildings reduced to rubble and a deserted mosque with broken windows. Police posts, circled with barbed wire fences, had sprung up every few hundred yards.

This Is What Heat Stroke Does To Your Body

Image
Temperatures were in the 100s when Vanessa Dunn, a 29-year-old Los Angeles-based makeup artist, was driving back home to California from Virginia last summer. After hours on the road and drinking limited water, she was struck by a severe case of dehydration and heat stroke. ”I wasn’t drinking enough water because I didn’t want to stop to pee,” she says. When she finally pulled over for the night she felt light-headed, and she couldn’t keep food down when she tried to eat. She even threw up blood.

What are the Causes of Mental Illness

Although the exact cause of most mental illnesses is not known, it is becoming clear through research that many of these conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. What Biological Factors Are Involved in Mental Illness? Some mental illnesses have been linked to an abnormal balance of special chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters help nerve cells in the brain communicate with each other. If these chemicals are out of balance or are not working properly, messages may not make it through the brain correctly, leading to symptoms of mental illness. In addition, defects in or injury to certain areas of the brain have also been linked to some mental conditions. Other biological factors that may be involved in the development of mental illness include:     Genetics (heredity): Many mental illnesses run in families, suggesting that people who have a family member with a mental illness are more susceptible

Does what you do define the type of person you are? | Ben Ambridge

How do your daily activities define your personality? Psychologists have explored personality from every conceivable angle except one: what do people with particular personality traits actually do in terms of everyday activities? First, compared to other people broadly similar to you (in terms of age, class and gender) are you more or less: Extroverted (the life of the party) Agreeable (easy to get along with) Conscientious (do jobs straight away) Open (interested in new experiences and ideas). According to a new study from the University of Rochester, your answers can predict the following: If you are extroverted, you’re more likely than average to have recently drunk spirits, been running, used your phone while driving, told a dirty joke, tried to get a tan, played golf, discussed money-making schemes, decorated a room and used a sauna. If you are agreeable, you’re more likely to have recently sung in the shower; less likely to have got drunk. If you are conscientious, you’re less l

Alexis Sanchez and Arsene Wenger share lovely moment after FA Cup final win

Image
Arsenal’s players will no doubt wake up this morning with sore heads following their win over Chelsea in the FA Cup final on Saturday. Only a few gave the Gunners a chance of beating the Premier League champions at Wembley Stadium but their 2-1 win wasn’t undeserved. Arsenal were the better team and, though Alexis Sanchez’s goal could have been disallowed for handball, Antonio Conte will be aware that his side simply weren’t good enough.

Woman found shot dead in street in Kilburn

Image
A woman was shot dead by attackers who may have been on bicycles, police have said. The 20-year-old was shot in Malvern Road in Kilburn, north-west London, on Friday night and later pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed she was standing with a group when they were "approached by a number of suspects possibly on pedal cycles", a Met Police spokesman said. A shot was fired at the group and the woman was killed. The victim's family has been notified and a post-mortem examination is due to take place later.

Why Do Men Run Faster Than Women?

Running is a sport that both men and women enjoy, whether they're racing in a 5K or a marathon, or competing for a team or their country while speeding around a track. But no matter the venue, it's pretty common to see men clock faster times than women do. Given that both men and women train equally hard, why is it that men, on average, are faster runners than women? Even the world's fastest man is about a second speedier on the 100-meter dash than the world's fastest woman: Usain Bolt did it in 9.58 seconds, versus the late Florence Griffith Joyner's time of 10.49 seconds. The answer to this gender bender is multifold, but it has a lot to do with hormones and body size, doctors told Live Science. [Who Are the World's Fastest Man and Woman?] Before girls and boys hit puberty, their bodies are fairly similar. During puberty, however, boys experience a surge of testosterone. By adulthood, some men have up to 20 times more testosterone than women do, according to

Nigerian goat declared missing in America

Image
The Police in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, in the United States of America have begun a manhunt for thieves who stole a Nigerian goat. The riddle the police are trying to crack is: Who would steal a goat named Cinnamon? Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office is now in search of the answer after the Nigerian dwarf goat was stolen from the town of Poygan, which has a very small population of just over a 1,000 people, with 397 households and 308 families, according to the census figures available. Cinnamon’s owners say the goat was taken on May 25, and they are hoping for its safe return. The Sheriff’s Office in a Facebook post says Cinnamon is under a vet’s care and needs medication. The Facebook post has attracted many comments, with one saying: Who the he** steals a goat?”

Why men should not share beds with their wives

It Took Four Years of Lying on a Riverbed for a Photographer to Capture This Shot

Paparazzi these days will do literally anything for the shot. Even go snorkeling underwater every night for four years. This photo, shared on bioGraphic yesterday, shows a hungry Eurasian beaver swimming with a poplar branch, on her way to feed her pups in western France’s Loire region. Other people have taken photos of wet beavers before (this is the internet, after all), but this one is quite exceptional. And apparently, it was a tough shot for photographer Louis-Marie Preau to get.

A meeting between the Pope, patients and researchers acknowledges how the two sectors can help each other. People in developing nations are aiding research into the genetics behind Huntington’s disease. Dilia is the oldest of an unusual crowd of people due to meet Pope Francis this week at the Vatican. The 79-year-old widow from rural Colombia married into a family whose members carry the gene for Huntington’s disease, a hereditary neurodegenerative disorder. Fate was cruel. Of her 11 children, 9 inherited the disease. Five have died and the remaining four are sick. The next generation is affected, too. One grandchild has died and five more show symptoms.

Alcohol may cause less changes to your personality

When you are drunk, your personality may change, but not as much as you think, a study shows. When you are drunk, your personality may change, but not as much as you think, a study shows. The findings revealed that people typically report substantive changes to their personality when they become intoxicated, but observers perceive less differences between their “sober” and “drunk” personalities. “We were surprised to find such a discrepancy between drinkers’ perceptions of their own alcohol-induced personalities and how observers perceived them,” said Rachel Winograd, psychological scientist at the University of Missouri.
