A President talks about the importance of carers

This year the focus is on building communities which support carers in looking after their loved ones well, while recognising that they are individuals with needs of their own. In these communities, carers feel recognised and valued.
Nicola Gale, President of the British Psychological Society, says:
"Carers Week reminds us each year of the importance of carers and highlights the challenges they face and the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK.
"Though many find caring gives a sense of satisfaction and teaches them new skills, without the right support people can struggle. Evidence shows that caring can cause physical and mental ill health, poverty and social isolation.
"Carers can struggle to hold down a job, get a good night's sleep, stay healthy and maintain relationships with friends and family.
"In all these areas psychology can and should offer help."
