Newcastle United have achieved promotion back to the Premier League, just 348 days after being relegated. The Magpies did it in style by beating Preston North End 4-1 at St James' Park. Ayoze Perez opened the scoring for Newcastle, but Preston's Jordan Hugill scored an equalizer 13 minutes into the first half.  Then it was a tense wait for Magpie fans until Christian Atsu scored shortly before half time, raising hopes of automatic promotion.

The first was the president’s unwavering moral and material support for the family of the late Ontlametse Phalatse, the teenage girl who died as a result progeria, a rare disease caused by genetic disorder. It’s a disease that accelerates ageing and is a painful site to bear.

Sudan security recommends dismissal of chief justice

April 24, South Sudanese security service officials have allegedly advised President Salva Kiir to remove and replace the country’s Chief Justice, Chan Reec Madut, warning that a delay to could result in the situation being exploited by political dissidents and sections of frustrated populations to go on a mass demonstration. “The issue of chief justice is a recurring matter, and we have done our best to resolve the differences between him and his colleagues, including acting on his wish to remove his deputy but it seems this is now becoming a national security matter to be ignored,” 

My federal university will never honour politicians, moneybags – Vice Chancellor

The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, Kayode Soremekun, on Monday said the award of honorary degrees of the institution would not go to politicians and moneybags. Mr. Soremekun spoke at a news conference in Oye-Ekiti to herald week-long activities marking the maiden convocation ceremony of the institution. According to him, the university does not subscribe to “cash-and-carry honorary degrees” often given to politicians and moneybags across the country.

Gun used in conservationist Kuki Gallmann shooting found

Police have found the gun thought to have been used to shoot conservationist Kuki Gallmann. Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery said the weapon is undergoing ballistic examinations to confirm if it was used to fire shots at 73-year-old Gallmann. US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec condemned the shooting and called for the arrest of the perpetrators.

A former special adviser to Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola on Federal Matters and a nominee for commissionership,  Idia Babalola, escaped death by a whisker when a mob of youths attacked her at the funeral of the late Senator Isiaka Adeleke which was held on Monday at Ede, Osun State. According to eyewitnesses, everywhere was calm during prayer session held ahead of interment until Mrs. Babalola appeared at the venue. The youths became angry on sighting her because they considered her to be a ‘traitor,’ an eyewitness said.

Riots erupted in Paris on Sunday night after protesters demonstrated against the success of Marine Le Pen in the first round of the French elections. The leader of the far-right Front National party successfully advanced through the first voting period. She will now face off against En Marche! leader Emmanuel Macron in May.  In the wake of the early results which solidly placed Le Pen in the final round, anti-fascist protesters demonstrated in the French capital. 

Six Israeli men charged for assaulting Arabs who date Jewish women

Six Israeli men have been charged with assaulting Arabs due to their relationships with Jewish women. The Arab men were allegedly attacked with knives, clubs and metal bars between December 2016 and April. At least six incidents took place. The six men were charged in Be’er Sheva and two of the group are soldiers, Haaretz claims.

French rider left bloodied by baseball bat attack

Paris - Bloodied and bruised French cyclist Yoann Offredo claimed on Monday he was assaulted by box cutter and baseball bat wielding attackers while on a training ride. "Today, victim of an assault, with a box cutter and a baseball bat while training with two friends," wrote the 30-year-old on his Facebook account, alongside photos of himself with a bloodied face and huge welt on his forearm.

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy (IRGCN) formally took delivery of the first consignment of the new Nasir anti-ship missile during a ceremony held on 22 April. Defence Minister Hossein Dehghan said the Nasir can be mounted on speedboats, prepared quickly for launch, flies at a low flight altitude, and has an advanced radar system that gives it anti-jamming capabilities.

Spanish fascists made the Nazi salute and sang falangist songs at the funeral of a man who once served as Franco's vice-president. Jose Utrere Molina, who served as Franco's second-in-command during the final years of his reign, died on Saturday (April 22) at the age of 91. Molina remained loyal to Franco and fascism long after the dictator's death. He published two sets of memoirs lauding the achievements of Franco's regime and consistently opposed the removal of fascist monuments as Spain transitioned to democracy.

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Monday struck out a suit by a former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, against the EFCC over its seizure of his properties. The other applicants are Mr. Obanikoro’s wife, Fati; his sons Gbolahon and Babajide; and his wife, Moroophat. Mr. Obanikoro and his family had sued the commission through their lawyer, Lawal Pedro, seeking a court’s declaration that the forceful seizure of their personal effects constitutes a gross violation of their rights.

Auto crash leaves 6 dead, 12 injured in Kogi

An auto crash at Osara village along Lokoja-Okene road in Kogi State, has left six persons killed and 12 others injured. The accident which occurred on Monday about 9am, involved three vehicles – a truck, a Toyota Hiace bus and a Nissan Primera car. Speaking with newsmen, an eyewitness disclosed that the truck and Toyota bus had a head on collision while the Nissan Primera car rammed into them.

Cedric Skyers, 69, who could not use his left-hand side after a stroke, died after an incident at the Bupa-run Manley Court care home in New Cross, south-east London, in March 2016.

Angola's presidential council proposes Aug. 23 for national vote

Angola's Council of the Republic, a presidential group that consults on national decisions, has proposed Aug. 23 for a national election, state radio reported on Monday, a decision which hangs on President Jose Eduardo dos Santos' approval. Dos Santos, 74, will step down as president after 38 years at the helm but will retain control of the powerful ruling MPLA party. He is Africa's second longest-ruling leader and said in February he will not run in this year's presidential election.

ANGOLA: Shoprite Unveils Major New Investment For Market

Shoprite Holdings, Africa’s largest grocer, is readying a significant new investment plan to expand its operations in Angola. According to local reports, the South African group will pump $571.7m into the country over the next five years, which will be used to open 15 shopping centres, 22 supermarkets, and a warehouse. It will also upgrade four existing supermarkets.  The moves are expected to create more than 5,600 new jobs during the period. Shoprite currently operates 29 supermarkets in Angola.

The Presidency has denied that renovations at the expense of taxpayers are being undertaken at President Jacob Zuma’s private homestead in Nkandla. "We also wish to underscore that no government department‚ including the Department of Public Works‚ will be permitted to renovate any of the President’s private houses in Nkandla‚" said Presidency spokesperson Bongani Ngqulunga in a statement.

Mr. Adeleke, who represents Osun West Senatorial District died  on Sunday morning at a hospital in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, family sources told PREMIUM TIMES. Elected on the platform of the APC, Mr. Adeleke is also a former governor of Osun. He was 62 years old. Mr. Adeleke’s colleaue in the Senate, Shehu Sani, already expressed his condolence. “Senator Isiaka Adeleke;a calm,principled and responsible gentleman.He represented his people with maturity,dignity and distinction.Adieu,” Mr. Sani said.

Pope Francis recalled meeting a refugee in a camp  on the Greek island of Lesbos in 2016 . "I don't know if that man is still in Lesbos or if he has managed to go somewhere else, I don't know if he was able to leave that concentration camp, because many refugee camps are concentration camps due to overcrowding," he said.

A  home once owned by Elvis Presley in the 1950s as he was skyrocketing to fame was damaged by fire Saturday. The Memphis home was unoccupied and undergoing renovations. Memphis Fire Lt. Wayne Cooke didn't have a damage estimate. He says the electrical fire started in the wall between the living room and dining room. He says firefighters responded just after 7:30 a.m. CDT and the fire was under control about 20 minutes later.

Bank of Canada governor 'happy' to see plan for GTA housing market

Measures to cool the housing market in the Greater Toronto Area have received a warm response from Canada's central banker, who said Saturday it should have some effect on runaway housing prices. "I'm happy there are measures," Stephen Poloz, the governor of the Bank of Canada, told reporters during financial meetings in Washington. "It's a risk we've been highlighting," he said of skyrocketing housing prices in Toronto.
